John Bearsley

Managing Director

When asked to summarise JDS in five words or less, John Bearsley needed just two: “the team”. It's an idea that has underscored his role as co-founder and Managing Director at JDS: the development of a culture that prizes supporting one another to the same degree that it values excellence. John's approach is to hire exceptional people, and then trust and support them in getting the job done.

This approach extends beyond JDS internally to clients and vendors, where John works tirelessly to ensure that relationships keep getting better, and that our understanding of both client needs and technologies deepens. He is dedicated to being—and staying!—ahead of the curve, and this is reflected in his commitment to the development of staff and partnerships.

John's philosophy towards his business and his team can best be explained in his own words: "We typically spend the best hours of the best days of our lives at work, so it's important to work with good people, doing things we’re proud of and using our skills effectively". And, as his staff would testify, he has a lot to be proud of.

It’s been a long while since I was involved in the technical delivery of our solutions, though that is where I started. I’m proud to say that these days JDS consultants are better than I ever was. They are better trained, supported and equipped with far more powerful toolsets and capabilities than ever before and proving this by delivering great outcomes for our customers in increasingly complex and scaled environments.

While I’m still a bit of a techy I’m more of a ‘people person’. My skills are mainly focussed on building out our team and our capabilities so we can continue to keep ahead of the curve. I’m a big believer in building small, empowered, highly capable teams.

Whilst I’m ‘off the tools’ these days I still have a deep interest in how we employ good technology to help present the health of IT services to decision makers, and how automation, machine learning and other emerging technologies impact and assist the delivery of IT applications and services.

Workplace Solutions

I’m ultimately accountable for JDS in its entirety, so I poke my nose into almost all facets of the business. The key is to try and keep my fingers out of it though and instead to build and support our people and teams to get on and do it.

Steve Smith

It’s been a while since I was ‘on the tools’ but my background is as a software engineer and I have a solid understanding of the technology stacks and the components within those stacks. My strength, however, is probably more in understanding technology from the other perspective—from that of a consumer of technology as well as that of a supplier.

Being a part of providing a work environment that provides others with the opportunity to deliver the best that they can, and enjoying celebrating those achievements—but all the while understanding that, important as the work environment is, we all have lives of even greater importance outside the work environment.

Steve Smith

Chief Operating Officer

I take great pride in supporting others in achieving their objectives. Whether it be a new role within the organisation, moving from a support to a consulting position, or just picking up a new and challenging technology, the small part I play in supporting JDS staff gives me the greatest sense of achievement.

Steve has recently become Chief Operating Officer at JDS, after nearly ten years as General Manager for Victoria and South Australia. Pre-JDS, he was a consulting professional with Deloitte, which is where he first worked with John. Later, realising the potential held by JDS (under some duress, and allegedly after at least one beer), he joined John in helping to grow a successful, sustainable business.

The things Steve likes best about JDS are its people and its culture. The focus is on teamwork, and working together to drive outstanding results for customers. He allies with John, in that for Steve, it's "all about the team!".

Gene Kaalsen

National Sales Director

Gene has recently joined JDS, after an extensive career in IT sales both within Australia and New Zealand, Asia Pacific and Japan. His role as National Sales Director is to help our sales team keep driving customer satisfaction by accurately identifying business needs, and finding—or designing—the perfect solution to fit.

Outside of his work with JDS, Gene has a green thumb, loving tropical garden design and entertaining at the barbecue with friends and family.

Gene's approach is focused on guiding his staff, while taking a holistic look at the market and where JDS sits within it. We look forward to working with him, and are happy to have such an expert on board!

David Steed

I am a technical salesperson with solid knowledge of application performance management and Splunk.

Workplace Solutions

In my role, I get to manage, motivate, and learn from an amazing team of consultants, solving complex but interesting application challenges. The other part of my role involves keeping abreast of the solutions from our five vendors and helping our clients to solve complex problems using vendor solutions combined with our expertise.

Workplace Passion

My passion is helping clients to solve seemingly impossible technical problems, by applying my 30+ years of experience, in concert with some awesome vendor solutions and a team of JDS magicians. My key interest is in positioning our solutions to help identify application issues, ensuring our customers only make the news for the right reasons.

David Steed

General Manager—NSW

Dave Steed is a creative soul, with what his staff recognise as being superior table-tennis skills.  Beyond that, though, his true strength lies in communication and in relationship-building, where he is very much focused on the customer.

Dave's managerial philosophy is to hire good people that you can trust to get the job done, and then give them the support they need to develop.  His Sydney-based team are on the leading edge of new technologies, particularly Splunk and AppDynamics, an expertise which has been built with Dave's ongoing encouragement.

Before starting at JDS, Dave founded his own ITIL-focused ITSM company, later acquired by ASG.  JDS Managing Director John Bearsley spent years wooing him before he finally joined us, and we're never going to let him go.

Matthew Stubbs

General Manager—QLD

Matt Stubbs leads the JDS team in Queensland. He joined JDS in 2015 having been Account Manager at a leading systems integrator for the past several years. In that role, Matt had chosen JDS to providing monitoring and dashboard solutions for his clients and had experienced firsthand the capabilities that JDS brings to deliver high-quality solutions.

Matt provides the best solutions possible for our customers in Queensland, delivered by dynamic and capable local consultants, supported by the national JDS team, and using industry-leading technology from our strategic partners.

Outside of his work with JDS, Matt is a volunteer lifesaver and has a strong interest in sustainable energy and application of technologies that will transform the energy sector. He holds an Executive MBA from AGSM, Diploma of Education and Bachelor of Business—Computing from QUT, Diploma of Climate Finance from Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, as well as MSP and PMP certifications.
