On Friday of last week through to Saturday afternoon JDS Australia held its inaugural Staff Retreat at the Nepean Country Club, just outside of Rosebud on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Held over two days on a ‘live-in’ basis, the focus of the Retreat was both professional development and social interaction.
From a professional standpoint, JDS has a long standing tradition of holding monthly ‘conferences’ across the organisation where all employees come together for a full day to share ideas, learn technology tips and network with colleagues. The retreat was an extended version of these conferences that acknowledged that our consultants need not only be technically brilliant, but solid business consultants as well. As such a focus of the retreat was on the ‘softer’ side of our business – listening to clients, understanding their requirements, establishing long lasting relationships and working well within teams, both internally with the client and within JDS.
A highlight of the Retreat was a keynote speech from Squadron Leader Peter Robinson, former leader of the RAAF’s aerobatic team the Roulettes. Peter provided a very entertaining and informative discussion on the similarities that his roles in the past have with organisations like JDS – where the importance of clear communications and teamwork are paramount.
As with all JDS staff functions, it wasn’t all hard work! Between some terrific food at the Club and local establishments, and some sampling of local wines (and the occasional lager as well!) – JDS consultants managed to demonstrate that if you continue to enjoy your work environment and the people that you work with, the services we provide for our clients invariably is of a high standard. With our resident ‘Rock God’ and consultant Trevor Murray and his band, Bag O’ Nails, a concert held on the Friday evening proved that IT systems consulting is not the only skill that our consultants excel in.
Without a shred of doubt the two day event was considered a success by everyone involved and JDS looks forward to complementing our ongoing monthly staff conferences with the retreat on an annual basis.
