The IT industry often seems acronym addicted, and the software testing and application monitoring fields are certainly typical of this. Here at JDS we even named our company newsletter the TLA Times (TLA of course standing for Three-Letter Acronym).

Here is a list of acronyms (many of them TLAs) that are relevant to people who work with the ex-Mercury (now HP Software) toolset.

  • AIS – The Accredited Integration Specialist is HP’s basic certification level, which they offer for much of their product suite. It is followed by the ASE certification. JDS staff reviewed the AIS exams for QC, QTP, LoadRunner and BAC.
  • AJAXAsynchronous JavaScript and XML is a group of technologies that enable web pages to be updated with data from a server without reloading the entire web page. Security testing of AJAX applications is supported by WebInspect, functional testing is supported by QTP and performance testing of AJAX applications is supported by LoadRunner.
  • AMFAction Message Format is used by some Adobe Flash objects to communicate with a server. This protocol is supported by LoadRunner.
  • AMPAssessment Management Platform is an Enterprise console for WebInspect which allows easy management of web application security assessments with WebInspect.
  • ASE – The Accredited Systems Engineer is HP’s practicioner-level certification which they offer for much of their product suite. It is preceded by the AIS certification. JDS staff reviewed the AIS exams for QC, QTP, LoadRunner and BAC.
  • AUTApplication Under Test. See also SUT.
  • BACBusiness Availability Center.
  • BP – Business Process, like a use case. not to be confused with BP in the context of SAP, which means Business Partner.
  • BPMBusiness Process Monitor.
  • BPTBusiness Process Testing.
  • BTOBusiness Technology Optimisation.
  • CCM – Mercury Change Control Management was an addon that hooked into uCMDB to provide automated impact analysis for requested changes. It is now called HP Release Control.
  • C&S – The Web Click and Script, vuser type promises to make creating vugen scripts for web applications easier.
  • CI – When discussing uCMDB, this would be a Configuration Item. When discussing certification, this would be referring to Mercury’s Certified Instructor qualification (which several JDS staff hold).
  • C&I – HP Consulting and Integration, a group within HP who provide professional services. This is a different group to HP PS.
  • CITConfiguration Item Type.
  • CPC – The Certified Product Consultant certification was Mercury’s more advanced product certification, requiring a minimum of 1 year of practical experience. It is roughly equivalent to HP’s ASE certification.
  • CPS – The Certified Product Specialist certification was Mercury’s entry-level product certification. It is roughly equivalent to HP’s AIS certification.
  • CRS – The Central Repository Service is the central storage for all you organization’s BPM scripts within BAC. In BAC 6.x, CRS was known as the Script Repository.
  • DDMDiscovery and Dependency Mapping (previously known as MAM).
  • DOMDocument Object Model.
  • EMSEnterprise Management Software is used to monitor IT systems, BAC helps protect your investment in legacy EMS by providing EMS adapters so that data from them can be used for BAC System Availability Management, instead of re-implementing all of your existing system monitoring using SiteScope.
  • EUMEnd User Management.
  • GIFGovernance Interoperability Framework.
  • HPHewlett Packard.
  • HP PSHP Professional Services.
  • IMAPInternet Message Access Protocol. An email protocol used to receive email from a mail server. Supported by LoadRunner.
  • ISEBInformation Systems Examination Board, best known for their software testing certifications.
  • ISTQBInternational Software Testing Qualifications Board, best known for their software testing certifications. Very similar to ISEB.
  • ITIL -The Information Technology Infrastructure Library is a set of concepts and techniques for managing IT infrastructure, development, and operations. uCMDB is an HP Software product which supports ITIL.
  • ITSMF – The IT Service Management Forum is an international industry body for ITIL professionals.
  • JDBCJava Database Connectivity. A standard API for connecting to a database. Supported by LoadRunner through the Java Record Replay vuser type.
  • KPIKey Performance Indicators aren’t just used by HR in your annual performance review; they are also critical when monitoring IT systems.
  • LRLoadRunner is HP’s performance testing tool.
  • LTU – When you purchase a software license from HP or an HP partner, the line item will show that you have purchased 1 LTU, or License To Use. Note that these may be delivered electronically, making it an E-LTU.
  • MAMMercury Application Mapping (now known as DDM).
  • MASE – The Master ASE certification level is HP’s highest certification. HP do not offer this certification for any of the former Mercury products. This certification is preceded by the ASE.
  • NNMNetwork & Node Manager.
  • ODBCOpen Database Connectivity. A standard API for connecting to a database. Supported by LoadRunner.
  • OV – HP OpenView.
  • OVPIOpenView Performance Insight.
  • PCPerformance Center. either a group of products that contains all performance related tools
  • PIProblem Isolation.
  • POP3Post Office Protocol 3. An email protocol used to receive email from a mail server. Supported byLoadRunner.
  • QCQuality Center test management software which allows effective management of requirements, test cases, test execution, defects and reporting. Integrates with both functional test automation (WinRunner, QTP) and performance testing tools (LoadRunner).
  • QoE – a user’s Quality of Experience (application availability and performance) can be measured with BAC’s End-User Monitoring component.
  • QTPQuickTest Professional. Functional Test Automation software. Similar to WinRunner
  • RDPRemote Desktop Protocol (similar to Citrix). Microsoft,
  • RTERemote Terminal Emulation. A LoadRunner vuser type which emulates users of character-based applications.
  • RUMReal User Monitor.
  • SAMSystem Availability Management
  • SAP – is a the world’s third largest software company; they specialise in ERP software. SAP use LoadRunner for their internal performance testing, and QTP is a much friendlier tool for functional test automation of SAP than CATT scripts.
  • SAPGUI – Is the LoadRunner vuser type used to create scripts for the SAP front end (GUI).
  • SCASimultaneous Crawl and Audit is a feature of WebInspect where a web application will be tested for security vulnerabilities while being crawled, rather than separating these activities into two completely separate phases.
  • SiSSiteScope is an HP tool for monitoring servers. Rather than use the obvious acronym, which has unfortunate historical overtones, SiS is used instead.
  • SITSystem Integration Test.
  • SLAService Level Agreement.
  • SLMService Level Management.
  • SMTPSimple Mail Transfer Protocol. An email protocol used to send email. Supported by LoadRunner.
  • SOAService Oriented Architecture.
  • SOAP – Apparently as of verion 1.2 of the SOAP standard, SOAP no longer stands for Simple Object Access Protocol. When you hear “SOAP”, think “Web Services”. Functional testing, Security Testing, Performance Testing, and Application Monitoring of web services using SOAP is fully supported by products in the the HP Software toolset.
  • SQLStructured Query Language. Diagnostics, LoadRunner.
  • STSystem Test.
  • SITSystem Integration Test.
  • SUTSystem Under Test. Often used in Performance Testing instead of AUT.
  • SVTStress and Volume Testing. yet another name for Performance Testing.
  • TDTestDirector.
  • TQL – Pronounced “tee-ql”, it stands for Topology Query Language. It allows you to query your uCMBD.
  • TSR – A Test Summary Report. Being a test management tool, Quality Center will provide the core information for this report, such as the status of executed test cases and defects.
  • UAT – User Acceptance Test. Test cases will not generally be automated during this test phase, but testing should still be managed with a tool such as Quality Center.
  • uCMDBUniversal Configuration Management Database is HP’s implementation of a CMDB. It stores the configuration of the different components of a company’s IT infrastructure.
  • VBVisual Basic. Some LoadRunner vuser types use VB or VBScript as a scripting language.
  • WRWinRunner is Mercury’s old functional test automation tool. It is now almost entirely replaced by QTP.
  • WSDLWeb Services Definition Language (pronounced wiz – del) is an XML format that describes a web service. It can be used to validate SOAP calls to the web service for correctness.
