A delicious, laneway breakfast kicked off International Women’s Day (IWD) for the JDS Melbourne team today. IWD 2018 is a great chance for reflection as we celebrate more women in our leadership, technical, and business roles than ever before—a trend that we hope gains speed in the local tech industry. While women in STEM have come a long way in the last couple of decades, the need to #PressforProgress—this year’s IWD theme—is still evident.

According to the Australian Financial Review, “Reports indicate that women hold just under a third of all IT jobs, and less than 10 per cent of technology jobs in Australia. Female tech entrepreneurs are outnumbered by their male counterparts at a rate of about four to one.”  

At JDS, we are committed to being part of the change in those statistics, working to promote ICT as a career for women. One of the ways we do this is by highlighting the successful women working in our team and the career paths they took to get here.

In this month’s Women in IT interview, we shine a spotlight on one of our longest-standing female leaders, HR Manager Josie Janssen.

Josie Janssen, HR Manager, Melbourne

Intending to pursue a career as a police officer after graduation, Josie took on early advice to further her education before entering the force. However, after studying Human Resources, she developed a passion for the industry and working with people and culture teams, and decided to enter the workforce in HR.

Commencing with Hays, before transitioning to roles in recruiting and state government, Josie joined the JDS family in 2012 and has significantly contributed to the advancement of the business since.

I believe that we are not just a team because we work together, but more so because we respect, trust, and care for each other.

What drew you to your career?

My career ambition when I was younger was to be in the police force. After studying human resources, I found another way to channel my passion for people and develop talented professionals too.

What drew you to a job at JDS?

JDS had—and continues to maintain—an excellent reputation for great workplace culture and professional services, which appealed to me. Also, a previous manager of mine was working for JDS at the time and referred me for the role. Funnily enough, when I spoke with my recruiter friend for advice on the role and JDS as a company, I found out his wife also worked at JDS!

Have you progressed in your career at JDS? If so, how?

The People and Culture function has grown a lot since I commenced in 2012, but especially in the past year, which is exciting. We recently brought on a fabulous addition to help support me and the growth in our team across all four offices in Australia. In terms of my personal development, last year I completed a postgraduate degree at RMIT in Careers, Education and Development. JDS was really supportive as I completed my studies while working full-time. This is where I see my future headed and the area of HR I’m most interested in.

Why do you think it’s important for women to be in IT?

The perception of women in IT is thankfully changing. More could be done in primary schools to promote and encourage IT as a career for women. In high school, careers counsellors should be promoting engineering and IT tertiary options—especially as there are so many opportunities out there. Historically, younger women have not been as open or inspired to pursue these careers compared to men, so it is important for us to lead by example and promote the industry.

Why is JDS a good place to work for women?

JDS proudly supports ICT as a career for women. We collaborate, try to have fun at work, and make the effort with ladies lunches, vendor networking events, etc. JDS also has an additional maternity leave incentive to encourage our female staff to return to work. I believe that we are not just a team because we work together, but more so because we respect, trust, and care for each other.

Conclusion

JDS joins other leaders in the local tech industry who are pushing for change and more gender parity. It is this continued #PressforProgress that will steadily encourage a shift towards a more inclusive and equitable future. As SheStarts founder Nicola Hazell states, “If 2017 was the year of conversation around #MeToo, 2018 should be a year of action.”
